Main Functions:
1. Establishing Oil Pressure: Generating sufficient pressure to allow engine oil to reach all lubrication points, including the crankshaft, camshaft, bearings, pistons, and valves.
2. Forced Lubrication: Preventing direct contact between high-speed rotating metal parts, separating them with an oil film reduces wear and prevents bearing failure and cylinder scoring.
3. Assisting in Cooling and Cleaning: The flowing oil carries away heat generated by friction and washes away metal debris, carrying it back to the oil pan for sediment/filtration.
4. Ensuring Engine Lifespan: If the oil pump fails, the engine will experience severe wear and even become unusable in a short period.
